SPANISH FOOTBALL | LIGA | ROUND 12 MONDAY NIGHT GAME RESULT

Spanish Football tonight with the last game of Liga Round 12 played. The teams were Elche & Villarreal & after 90 mins of intense & entertaining Football the final result was 0 - 1 . Both teams tried hard all night & worked up their opportunities, all that failed was the definition & of course there was the sharp reflexes of the goalkeepers. But the surprise came when everyone was packing up to leave & the last moment winning goal arrived to the let down of the home fans & the exploding joy of the visitors
Elche perhaps had their clearest chance in the 24th min when Manu del Moral hit the bar. From here it was a see-saw affair with chances at both ends. However, Villarreal had a large period of dominance that bombarded the Elche goal & there was Manu Herrera to fend off all attempts. However, his "superpowers" could not last forever & Uche managed the winner in the 91st min.

Valauble win & three points to Villarreal, disappointment at Elche.

Tomorrow more Spanish Football with Spanish Teams Real Madrid & Real Sociedad having UEFA Champions League Group duties

REAL MADRID - REAL SOCIEDAD | UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCH PREVIEWS - POSSIBLE LINE-UPS

UEFA Champions League Group games commence tonight with two Spanish Football Clubs in action: Real Madrid & Real Sociedad. As habitual Spanish Sports paper "Sport" elaborate info-graphs with pre-match info & their idea of a possible starting 11 team line-up....
Real Madrid travel to Turin to play Juventus. Attractive match beforehand were the Italians are taking this as a final. They need to win - no other choice - in order to keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive this season. Real Madrid will feel the pressure of the local team & fans while they go in with plenty of doubts especially in the defensive line. Real Madrid only needs a draw ( 1 º point ) to automatically secure the next stage of the tournament, although while upfront they are overwhelming, their defence has troubles & Juventus will look to exploit. Real Madrid last won at Turin in 1972!

The speculated Real Madrid starting 11 team line-up against Juventus is:

Casillas, Arbeloa, Varane, S.Ramos, Marceloa, Xabi Alonso, Khedira, Modric ( Isco ), Bale, C.Ronaldo & Benzema

SPANISH FOOTBALL | NEXT STOP FOR LEWANDOWSKI ?

The Barcelona based Sports press has been giving Borussia Dortmund Polish International Forward Lewandowski plenty of attention these days. According to the local press sources Barça Coach Martino has asked for a "pure Striker" - a Number 9 - for the upcoming Winter Transfer Market & Lewandowski maybe the main target. Added to this the speculated transfer price is said by Barcelona media to be 8,5M€. Low? I explain below...
Lewandoski finishes contract 30th June 2014, & as of the 1st of January 2014 he becomes a "free agent", that is, he can negotiate with which ever Club he desires & Dortmund receives zero transfer fee. The German Club thus wants to shut a transfer deal before the 1st of Janauary 2014 so at least get some money, even if it is only 8,5M€.

The forward has a pre-agreement with Bayern Munich & all news indicates that Lewandoski wants to play at Bayern Munich, but Munich Coach Guardiola does not consider his signing a priority. The Spanish Coach team set-up & on-field strategy does not contemplate the need for a Centre Forward & the Dortmund player does not see that he will be an important element in the Bayern team or get regular playing time. With this scenario Lewandowski is willing to consider alternative options.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RESULTS | REAL MADRID - REAL SOCIEDAD GROUP GAMES

UEFA Champions League action tonight with two Spanish Football Clubs - Real Madrid & Real Sociedad - with Group match duties. Here is a brief summary of the main events, the final results - scores & all the goalscorers.
It was a virtual final for Juventus as they needed at least not to lose & thus stay in touch in the Champions League tournament, while Real Madrid needed at least a draw to assure virtually their presence in the next phase. The local atmosphere was ripe for Juventus & the first half was theirs as the Italians went from cold to hot, putting Real Madrid on the back foot as the first half went on. Juventus was more intense & managed to bring out the "defensive disorganization" that Real Madrid has been suffering the last few games. Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas had to make a few very important saves to keep his team alive. However, Juventus managed to get their prize when Real Madrid defender Varane fould Pogba in the penalty area. Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal fired home for goal in the 42nd min.

The second half started with Real Madrid more concentrated & a terrible mistake by Juventus defender Caceres allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to rob the ball & that was enough for the Portuguese star to brilliantly put in the equalizer in the 52nd min. This lifted Real Madrid as Juventus was now on the ropes & Xabi Alonso hit the cross-bar in the 55th min. Soon after Cristiano Ronaldo again robbed the ball & run away this time finding Gareth Bale on the right flank who controlled & fired in their second goal in the 60th min.

Juventus needed at least a point to stay alive in Champions & they bravely reacted to find the equalizer in the 65th min when Spanish International Fernando Llorente headed in the equalizer. From here both sides attempted the winner but as time ran out they settled for the draw.

Juventus would have preferred the win but the draw keeps them alive in Group B. Real Madrid managed the objective but again did not convince fully with their play & especially in defence.
Real Sociedad drew 0 - 0 with Manchester United & basically puts them out of the next stage of Champions League. The Spanish club will now have to look to secure third place of Group A to think about the Europa League. The match was fairly even with moments to Manchester United which could have sealed the victory. It was a even first half with the second half full of action. Manchester United forward Van Persie hit the post in the 65th min & then failed to convert a penalty in the 70th min. Real Sociedad tried hard in the latter part of the game but could not break through the Manchester United set up that allowed the English team to create their own chances as Real Sociedad left spaces in their attacks. Manchester United player Fellaini received a red card in the 90th min but the Spanish team could not take the numerical advantage as time had run out.

Tomorrow more Champions League action with Spanish Football Clubs Atletico de Madrid & FC Barcelona up for their Group duties.

CRISTIANO RONALDO GETS EUROPEAN FOOTBALL RECORDS & GIVES THEM TO REAL MADRID

There is no doubt that Portuguese International & Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is perhaps at his best level of his entire career in Football. The player is an authentic goal scoring machine both in Spanish Liga & in European competition. Last nights exhibition in Champions League against Juventus not only gave Ronaldo a goal but in doing so gave the player two individual records in European Football & two records for his team Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo is now the player who has scored more goals in the Champions League in the same calendar year. With 14 goals in 2013 he has already surpassed the 13 goals record previously held by Leo Messi. Furthermore, Ronaldo equals the record by Italian Inzaghi as the top scorer after four Group games of Champions League with 8 goals. Lastly Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled Shevchenko with 59 goals in Champions League. Only Spaniard Raul, Messi & Van Nistelrooy remain ahead.

Be Honest as a Referee

As often stressed in this blog, referees are humans and may make mistakes like players are doing as well. Sometimes, referees might have an immediate feeling and impression about whether there decision has been right or wrong. The best recipe is to forget about that and to not even allow such a process of doubts in order to not be influenced by it in any way. Things are different though when referees are advised to change their mind by their assistant referees. Florian Meyer has experienced that last Friday.

In the 42nd minute in the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart, an away team forward entered the penalty area and was allegedly touched and fouled by a Dortmund defender (Großkreutz). Meyer whistled, hesitated and then started to point to the spot. He was surrounded by players from both teams and then decided to correct his own decision. No penalty, no simulation! (You can watch this video starting at match minute 41:20).
In a post-match interview, Meyer stated: "I have whistled too early. My referee team have then informed me that it had not been a penalty from their point of view. I have never done something like that, but it was the correct decision". De facto, it was AR2 Christoph Bornhorst (FIFA) who advised Meyer to change his mind. One may well doubt whether this potential challenge happened in his area of responsibility or vicinity, but in the end, the decision was indeed correct. Stuttgart manager Bobic ironically commented: "This assistant must have the eyes of an eagle."
Of course this situation should be avoided, but in fact such scenarios are inevitable. They can and will happen, like they happened to Antony Gautier in a EL match this season.
Finally Meyer correctly re-started the match with a dropped ball as featured by the Laws of the Game. He still found the time and had the courage to explain his decision to the furious Stuttgart players. And this should be the essence of this post:
If your assistants are sure that you have made a clear mistake, change your mind. Law 5 allows that. Don't stick to your original decision being clearly told that it had been wrong. Be honest enough to admit your humaneness to the players (and on the highest level, also to the supporters). Doing that is a strength and may help you to increase the respect you are savouring from that. And if then the final decision is even correct, what do you want more?
